On 23 August, Najib became the first former Malaysian Prime Minister to be imprisoned, following the Federal Court’s decision to uphold the High Court’s previous ruling that Najib was guilty of all seven charges in his RM42 million SRC International Sdn Bhd corruption trial.

In addition to his 12-year sentence, the five-member bench chaired by Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat also upheld the RM210 million fine imposed by the High Court on Najib.

The saga surrounding Najib’s case have led to his supporters responding with threats of bloodshed and bigger demonstrations.

On 19 August, an orchestrated social media campaign by UMNO supporters saw Tengku Maimun and former Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s life threatened.

Following the threat, the Royal Malaysian Police have said that a teenager residing in Puchong, Selangor has been hauled up for investigations. The teenager is believed to be an UMNO supporter

On 24 August, Syed Muhammad Imran Syed Abdul Aziz who is UMNO Branch Chief for Southern Batu Caves said that a bigger demonstration will be held at the National Palace, should no action be taken to allow Najib a royal pardon.

Apart from those from UMNO, a PKR Member of Parliament had also expressed sympathy for Najib, calling him ‘a warrior who fought till the end’.
