Candidates who test positive for Covid-19 will be allowed to contest in the Melaka State Election, Election Commission (EC) Chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh said on Sunday.
He said the candidates’ nomination papers however, should be submitted by the stipulated time through their proposer or seconder.
“There is no problem for them (Covid patients) to contest, as long as they submit the nomination forms on time,” he told Bernama at Menara Persekutuan.
He also said Covid-19 screening for candidates was not mandatory.
“To ensure a smooth nomination process, the EC has set up a special tent at the nomination centre should a candidate turn up with Covid-19 symptoms on the day.”
“This tent will be managed by the health ministry and EC personnel. We will check every candidate’s temperature at the main entrance of the nomination centre. If the reading is above 37.5° Celsius, they will be directed to the tent,” he said.
Ghani said the checking and submission of the candidate’s nomination forms will then be managed by EC officers on duty at the tent.
About 12,900 workers from various agencies, including the health ministry, the police force and local authorities, will be involved in the state election.
“Of that number, 1,460 are police officers and 806 are health ministry staff.”
“We hope all supporters of contesting political parties will not gather or hold processions near the nomination centres and abide by all SOPs,” he added.
