Mahdzir: Rural Villagers Now Earn More Than RM5,000

The individual income in rural areas is more than RM5,000, said Datuk Mahdzir Khalid.

In a briefing session with Members of Parliament at the Parliament building today, the Rural Development Minister also said that this equates to an increase of 34.5% in a period of 17 years.

He cited statistics from the Malaysian Statistics Department which indicated that individual income in rural areas rose from RM1,729 in 2002 to RM5,004 in 2019.

A quick check on social media also found that key points from his speech were highlighted on Mahdzir’s official Facebook page.

The engagement session is an initiative to explain the Ministry’s direction and development plans for the upcoming year, and aims to garner bi-partisan support for Ministry programmes.

On water and electricity supply, Mahdzir claimed that rural households have recorded a rise from 74.7% in 2000 to 84.9% in 2019 and 84.6% in 2000 to almost 99% in 2019 respectively.

Mahdzir also claimed that data from the Communications and Multimedia Ministry (KKMM) showed internet coverage in rural areas was at 83.9%.

“This is proof that efforts by the Government were successful and capable of increasing the quality and living standards of rural residents,” he said.
