Former Melaka Head of State, Tun Datuk Seri Utama Mohd. Khalil Yaakob has appeared to be a popular grab and political capital among various political coalitions in the upcoming Melaka State Election.
On Monday, Amanah President, Mohamad Sabu had claimed that Khalil’s willingness to dine with Julasapiyah Kassim, the Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate for DUN Kuala Linggi is a positive note.
“The presence of an icon well-loved by people in Melaka, is a positive note for PH,” he said via a Facebook post.
The Head of State during the PH tenure was also seen dining with another PH (Amanah) candidate the very same day.
But things took a twist the next day, when Khalil appeared in two campaign trails belonging to different political coalitions.
One was that of Maznah Baharudin (Amanah/PH) who is contesting for the Ayer Limau seat, and another belonging to PN Chief Minister candidate, Datuk Wira Mas Ermieyati Samsudin who is contesting for the Tanjung Bidari seat.
The following days saw Khalil appearing alongside a few more PH candidates.
Among them are Datuk Seri Utama Idris Haron (Asahan), Ashraf Minghat (Teluk Mas), G Saminathan (Gadek) And Danish Zainudin (Pengkalan Batu).
The appearances had sent tongues wagging, with various PH leaders heavily propagating that the former Head of State is rooting for PH.
But today, Khalil surprised the public with an appearance alongside Barisan Nasional (BN) President, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and BN Chief Minister candidate, Datuk Seri Utama Sulaiman Ali in Lendu, of which Sulaiman is defending.
Khalil, a former UMNO Secretary-General was also reported to have told local repot terus that Sulaiman is a good man.
Moments later, PKR President, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Datuk Shamsul Iskander who is contesting the Paya Rumput seat both took to their respective social media accounts, posting pictures with Khalil.
Melaka has 495,000 eligible voters with 28 seats up for grab.
Pundits have said that the turnout will very likely be low, due to political fatigue and concerns over the Covid-19 situation.
