Sarawak DAP Chief Moves To Safer Seat, Fuels Speculation Of Cowardice

The Chief of Sarawak DAP, Chong Chieng Jen has decided not to defend his seat in Kota Sentosa in the coming Sarawak State Election.

Instead, he will be contesting in Padungan.

Over the week, talks have been rife that Chieng Jen’s is becoming unpopular among locals, resulting in plans to move him to a safer seat.

It was also said that a “clash of the century” may happen, should the Sarawak DAP Chief move to Batu Kawah to face Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) President, Dato’ Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

But the clash will not happen, as Sarawak DAP announced its candidates for six seats today.

In a press conference held today, Chieng Jen said that Michael Kong will contest in Kota Sentosa, while Kelvin Yii will be contesting in Batu Kawah.

The other candidates for DAP are Violet Yong (Pending), Abdul Aziz Isa (Batu Kitang) and Leslie Ting (Stakan).

Political analyst Professor James Chin of the University of Tasmania’s Asia Institute this morning casted doubts over the “clash of the century”.

He said it was risky for Chieng Jen to contest in Batu Kawah, as Dr. Sim Kui Hian still enjoys solid support from the ground.

“Unless there’s an overall mood to dislodge the government like in GE14, where people wanted to remove the government.”

“But, so far, I don’t see that happening in Sarawak,” he added.

Associate Professor Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi from the Universiti Malaya concurred with Professor James.

Awang said that Chieng Jen would have an uphill task if he wanted to contest in Batu Kawah, including latest surveys on the ground, strong winning formulas, strategies and efficient machinery.

“I won’t say DAP has no chance to win in Batu Kawah.”

“It’s still 50:50. But Chieng Jen will only contest there if he has the confidence to win.”

He added that Chong could also have a second option, which is to contest in the Padungan seat as it remains a DAP stronghold.

“So, Chieng Jen can contest Padungan and win comfortably.”

“However, it will also show that as the Sarawak DAP Chairman has neither the courage to face Dr Sim nor the confidence to defend his Kota Sentosa seat as the previous voting pattern to support DAP in his constituency is on a downward trend.”
