Sony Shuts Down Penang Plant, After 37 Years In Operation

The Sony manufacturing factory in Perai, Penang, is officially shut down after 37 years in operation.

 

Videos of the flag-lowering ceremony which was held on Friday, was shared by former staffs of the plant who expressed sadness.

The closure of the plant which produces audio products such as the Walkman for export and local markets, is expected to affect 3,400 jobs consisting of local Malaysians and foreigners.

Sony is one of the island’s most innovative multinational companies, founded and established in Butterworth, Penang and Kuala Lumpur in 1984 before making a mark in the country’s technology scene.
