UMNO’s Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim has thanked Pakatan Harapan (PH) for supporting Budget 2022.
This comes after PH decided not to support a bloc vote on Thursday.
“Thank you DAP. Thank you PKR. Thank you PAN (Amanah),” the Baling Member or Parliament said.
According to Parliamentary Standing Orders, at least 15 MPs need to be in support of a bloc vote before it can be triggered.
The results and voting pattern of every MP present will then be recorded and published in the Parliamentary Hansard.
Several Opposition MPs had earlier on attempted to call for a bloc vote.
Among them were Warisan President, Datuk Seri Mohd. Shafie Apdal and Muda founder, Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman.
But only 12 MPs stood up to support the bloc vote count. They are from Warisan (7 MPs), Pejuang (4 MPs) and Muda (1 MP).
Not a single PH MP stood up to support the bloc vote.
In September, PH had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Among the terms stipulated are that PH will support or abstain from voting on the budget, in exchange for allocation.
Pundits have since said that the MOU has rendered PH as a “toothless tiger”.
Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs criticised PH, saying the coalition has “emasculated” themselves.
“So now, we don’t actually have an effective opposition any more.”
“We’re seeing the demise of the opposition in Malaysia. It’s extremely harmful to the development of parliamentary democracy not only in Malaysia but in all other Westminster systems. We are setting a very bad example for the rest.”
